The choice
For ownership and routing, read trusted CRM data first. Add a waterfall when multiple sources are needed for missing fields and you can control fallback, spend and provenance. Buying a second provider is not the first fix for an unresolved account identity.
Our reference trial tested the field decisions, not a vendor's coverage. The recommendation is about the operating design. A provider winner still needs your actual, permitted sample and a recorded accuracy and cost comparison.
What we actually tested
Six synthetic company-field cases exercised complete records, exclusions, missing fields, no match, protected values and a timeout. All six produced the intended disposition. Complete, excluded and protected records made no provider call. The timeout retained a retry state; the no-match case stayed unknown.
The provider responses were fixtures. We did not test Clay, Apollo or another database's contact accuracy, credit charges or live CRM writeback. No result here is a deliverability or coverage benchmark.

Choose for the job
| Option | When it earns a place | Evidence here |
|---|---|---|
| Existing CRM fields and native actions | Required context is already trusted and the available actions meet the job | Reference logic tested; your CRM configuration still needs a trial |
| Clay waterfall | Several approved sources and fallback rules are needed for missing fields | Current documentation reviewed; product coverage not tested |
| Direct provider integration | One source meets the field requirement and a simple contract suffices | An alternative to evaluate on the same sample |
Check your CRM's license and available actions. A native option can reduce moving parts, but it is not automatically cheaper if it cannot preserve provenance or safely handle partial failures.
The provider trial to run
Use the same permitted sample for each option. Include complete accounts, difficult domains, duplicates and records that should not be enriched. Define accepted-field accuracy, required-field coverage, protected-field behavior and cost per accepted field before the trial.
Read returned evidence manually on a mixed sample. Record missing and incorrect results separately. A full row containing wrong facts is worse than an honest unknown. Include retries and failed calls when assessing operating cost.
Documentation and limits
Clay's waterfall documentation explains configurable provider sequencing. That supports its place on a trial shortlist, not a claim that it wins on your data. Use the enrichment workflow for the field contract and failure paths, and resolve ownership with the inbound routing workflow first.
