Get into the sources your buyers’ AI answers cite

Start with the questions buyers ask, inspect the actual sources behind the answers, and build a credible presence where the evidence is missing.

Visibility starts with a buyer question

An AI answer can name a company, cite a source or omit both. Treat those as different observations. A citation to your article is not a vendor recommendation. A brand mention is not evidence that your page supplied the answer.

Choose questions your team hears in calls, proposals and lost deals. Include the problem before the product category, the method a buyer is evaluating, comparisons and vendor selection. “How do we connect paid leads to qualified pipeline?” is a useful question when that is the problem you solve.

Keep a reproducible record

For each sample, save the exact prompt, engine, model or mode when visible, date, locale, account state and answer. Store the cited URLs and note brand mentions separately. Run repeated samples because answers vary. An absent brand in one response is an observation, not a verdict.

Keep a stable monthly set of 20 to 30 questions and add new questions separately. Otherwise a rising “share of answer” may simply reflect a friendlier prompt set. Preserve the denominator and sample count when reporting progress.

Work the sources the answer actually uses

Source surfaceWork worth doingEvidence to keep
Your siteAnswer the question directly, show the method and provide named, dated evidencePage changes, sources, index status and subsequent citations
Reviews and listsCorrect category, product facts and customer evidence on relevant listingsLive listing URLs and accurate review context
CommunitiesContribute useful expertise where the question already arisesGenuine discussions, disclosed affiliation and useful responses
Press and partnersEarn coverage through a specific, defensible contributionThe published page and what it actually says
YouTubeWalk through a real method or output with a transcript and supporting pageVideo, transcript, publication date and cited evidence
LinkedInGive founder and employee expertise a consistent public expressionOriginal posts linked to the underlying resource

Do not treat the same channel as the answer for every question. A comparison may lean on reviews; a technical method may cite documentation; a category decision may use third-party analysis. Inspect the source set before planning distribution.

Make the page easy to trust

Put the direct answer near the top. Explain who the method fits, what inputs it needs, the decision points, the failure cases and what a useful output looks like. Name the author, date the evidence and link primary sources for changeable platform facts.

Publish important content as readable HTML with useful internal links. Match structured data to the visible page. Google says the established SEO requirements apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode; it does not require special AI markup or guarantee inclusion. Google Search Central.

Prioritise gaps you can actually close

Score a gap by buyer relevance, strength of the missing evidence and feasibility. A question one target account asks before booking can be more valuable than a broad prompt with large apparent interest but little buying intent.

Separate three situations: the relevant page does not exist; it exists but is hard to discover or thin on evidence; or the answer draws from external sources where you have little coverage. The source-gap workflow turns each into a named next action.

Measure the work and the commercial result

Track completed source improvements, sampled mentions and citations, referrals you can identify, resources used in sales and qualified conversations that mention them. Ask buyers what they read. A screenshot of an AI answer is useful evidence of a sampled appearance, not proof of pipeline impact.

Publish walkthroughs when there is something real to demonstrate. Do not justify a video program with a universal claim that one domain dominates all engines. Citation patterns depend on the engine, question and sample.
