The buyer question became a search surface

Generated answers changed how a buyer can research a decision. A useful source answers the question, shows the evidence and makes the next decision easier.

The source and the change

On 10 May 2023, Google announced Search Generative Experience as an experiment in Search Labs. The announcement described generated responses alongside supporting information and further questions. This note revisits that source from today’s perspective. Google’s original SGE announcement.

The decision for a B2B team

A buyer may ask how to solve a problem before knowing the category or supplier. Your useful contribution is an answer that makes that decision clearer. A service claim alone rarely supplies the method, comparison or failure case the question needs.

We recommend starting with the exact language from calls: “Our cost per lead is fine, but pipeline is flat” is a better brief than “write an AI search article”. The answer needs a diagnosis, the evidence that distinguishes possible causes and a practical next step. It also needs to show when the method does not fit.

Three observations to keep separate

ObservationWhat it establishesWhat it does not establish
The brand is mentionedIt appeared in that sampled answerThat your page supplied the evidence
A page is citedThat URL was used or displayed in that sampleThat the buyer selected your company
A buyer names the resource on a callThe material influenced their research, by their accountThe resource independently caused the opportunity

Record the exact question, engine, date, mode where visible and cited URLs. Preserve absence too. Repeated samples are more informative than one favourable screenshot.

Build a source a buyer can use

Put a concise answer above the method. Describe the inputs, decision branches, owner, exceptions and output. Link primary documentation for platform-specific claims. Show an original, labelled example instead of inventing a client result. Make the page readable as HTML and link it from the relevant problem and service.

Distribute the resource in actual buyer conversations. The earliest return can be a better follow-up or a stronger proposal, even while organic discovery is developing. Ask what the buyer read and record the resource alongside a qualified conversation.

What remains true now

SGE was an early experiment, not today’s product name or a current configuration guide. Google’s current AI features documentation says established SEO requirements apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A special markup file does not guarantee inclusion. Use the source-gap review to inspect the answer that exists today rather than optimising against a remembered 2023 interface.
