A cited answer starts with useful evidence

Choose a buyer question you can answer with original work, then make the answer readable, attributable and easy to discover.

Issue 04 · Research basis: 2023 search shift · current Google guidance. Historical sources are interpreted for current GTM decisions.

The decision

Choose a buyer decision you can answer with evidence before producing another article about AI visibility. A page should help someone make the decision even if it never appears in an AI answer.

Useful evidence can be modest: a tested example, a decision branch, an editable measurement contract or an attributed field note. The advantage comes from what the reader can understand and use.

What changed, and what still applies

Google's May 2023 search announcement introduced generated answers as part of the search experience. Its current website guidance applies established search requirements to AI features: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google does not require a special AI schema or text file.

Our editorial implication: invest in a clear answer and supporting work, then verify discovery. Technical eligibility gives the page a chance to be considered. It does not promise a citation.

Turn a broad topic into something worth using

Consider an illustrative buyer question: should we enrich an inbound lead before assigning its owner?

A broad answer says enrichment improves personalization. A useful answer says to resolve customer status, open deals and ownership first, then route the saved request without blocking on optional enrichment. It shows the fallback when account identity is unresolved.

The second answer contains a decision, a dependency and an exception. A reader can take it into an operating meeting. Those are the elements to produce and review, whether discovery happens through Google, an AI engine or a colleague's message.

What to check this fortnight

Record the engine, exact buyer question, date and available session conditions. Read the pages actually cited in the answer. Classify the gap before choosing a task.

These are operating choices, not measured citation gains. Repeat a defined question set before calling a change a trend. One changed answer cannot establish that a page edit caused it.

One workflow

Question to page brief turns the observation into an answer, useful output, proof, limitations and named reviewer. The source-gap workflow helps choose the first defensible action.

Use this next

Take one recurring sales question and write a two-sentence answer. Add one exhibit that makes it usable and cite the evidence behind the claim. Use the search and content sourcing workflow to keep the original source and your interpretation distinct.

Before publishing, ask: what can the buyer decide here that they could not decide from the sources alone?
